The Wings of the White Bird

  1. THE WINGS OF THE WHITE BIRD - A black ink and black color pencil drawing on an 11 x 14 size coquille board. It appears in the book, "Tom O'Bedlam's Night Out and Other Strange Excursions," by Darrell Schweitzer, published by Ganley in 1985.

I don't know how Darrell's work ranks with other fantasy writers, but his stories have impressed me. I'm glad I was asked to illustrate so many of them.

I know now why it is that I am so sad; these knights of the holy spirit, I cannot get them out of my head. It is their eternal devotion to a cause that seems to have no end . . .

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the pit from pole to pole,
To whatever eternal God there be,
    I pledge my unconquerable soul.

Will Evil ever be conquered, eliminated from our conduct as humans?

I am sad because I cannot fathom a day when we are all so civilized that every single human being on Earth understands what an evil thought is, what an evil act is, and automatically rejects them both, just naturally thinks and behaves in a kind and decent manner.

I am sad because a world like that seems boring!

I am mad because I think that!

I am angry because this kind of thinking gives me a headache !!!
